1. Getty Center
The Getty Center in Brentwood, Los Angeles, is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum's permanent collection includes pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs.Among the works on display is the painting Irises by Vincent van Gogh.
The Central Garden
The central garden at the Getty Center is the work of artist Robert Irwin. Planning for the garden began in 1992, construction started in 1996, and the garden was completed in December 1997.
2. La Brea Tar Pits
The La Brea Tar Pits (or Rancho La Brea Tar Pits)are a famous cluster of tar pits around which Hancock Park
was formed, in the urban heart of Los Angeles. Asphalt or tar (brea
in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens
of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with water.
Over many centuries, animals that came to drink the water
fell in, sank in the tar, and were preserved as bones. The
George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits
and displaying specimens from the animals that died there.
3. Museum of Contemporary Art
Founded in 1979, MOCA is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to contemporary art. It is committed to the collection, presentation, and interpretation of work produced since 1940 in all media, and to preserving that work for future generations. In a remarkably short time, MOCA has developed one of the nation's most renowned permanent collections. Now numbering over 5,000 works and steadily growing, this invaluable cultural resource provides extensive opportunities for education and enjoyment to thousands of national and international visitors. Today the museum is housed in three unique facilities: MOCA Grand Avenue, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and MOCA Pacific Design Center.
4. Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is an art museum in Los Angeles
In December 2007, the Modern Art holdings were greatly expanded by the gift of the 130 item Janice and Henri Lazarof Collection. The collection features significant works from; Constantin Brancusi, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Camille Pissarro.
LACMA's Latin American Art galleries reopened in July 2008 after several years renovation. The Latin American collection includes pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, Modern and contemporary works.
5. Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County opened in Exposition Park, Los Angeles.
The museum is the largest in the western United States, and its collections include nearly 33 million specimens and artifacts and cover 4.5 billion years of history.
